Why in news?
A Parliamentary Committee has urged Indian Railways to conduct regular surveys of passenger satisfaction and evaluate the impact of redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The scheme aims to transform more than 1,300 railway stations into modern transit hubs, and the committee wants to ensure that upgrades truly improve the passenger experience.
Background
Launched in 2022, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) is a longโterm initiative to redevelop railway stations across India in a phased manner. Rather than focusing solely on architectural facades, the scheme envisions stations as integrated transport hubs with improved facilities, multimodal connectivity and sustainable designs. Master plans are drawn up for each station, and projects are executed according to local needs and projected growth.
The Ministry of Railways has identified more than 1,300 stations for transformation under ABSS. These include stations in metropolitan areas, state capitals and tierโII and tierโIII cities. By improving infrastructure and passenger amenities, the government hopes to make train travel safer, more comfortable and more accessible while supporting local economies.
Key features
- Passenger amenities: Redeveloped stations will provide wellโdesigned entry and exit points, spacious waiting halls, clean toilets, platforms with adequate roofing, and facilities such as lifts, escalators and free WiโFi.
- Accessibility and safety: Foot overbridges, skywalks, airโconcourse structures and improved signage will make it easier for passengers to move between platforms. Stations will incorporate facilities for persons with disabilities.
- Multimodal integration: Stations will be connected with bus terminals, metro lines, taxi bays and parking areas to facilitate seamless transfers between different modes of transport.
- One Station One Product: Dedicated kiosks will showcase local handicrafts and products, providing livelihood opportunities and giving travellers a taste of regional culture.
- Sustainable design: Emphasis is placed on green buildings, solar panels, rainwater harvesting, waste management and landscaping to reduce environmental impact.
Significance
- Enhanced passenger experience: Modern, comfortable stations will make train travel more appealing and convenient for millions of daily commuters and longโdistance travellers.
- Economic stimulation: Upgraded stations act as catalysts for urban renewal, boosting commercial activity, tourism and property values in surrounding areas.
- Inclusive development: By prioritising accessibility and local products, the scheme ensures that redevelopment benefits diverse user groups and supports regional artisans.
Conclusion
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme reflects a shift in Indiaโs approach to infrastructure: from mere functionality to holistic design that considers passengersโ comfort, connectivity and the environment. Ongoing monitoring and community feedback will be crucial to ensure that the revamped stations meet their objectives and truly serve as gateways to modern, sustainable cities.
