Find the official papers and answer keys
- UPSC previous question papers — look for Civil Services (Preliminary) or Civil Services (Main), then choose the year and paper.
- UPSC answer keys — check for the relevant examination and year when the official key is available.
How should a beginner use previous-year questions?
At first, look through a previous UPSC paper to see how questions are asked. You are not expected to answer everything before studying. After reading a topic, try related old questions to check your understanding. Older papers contain current-affairs questions from that time. Use them for learning, and use full-length mock tests for the upcoming exam to practise under timed conditions.
Build up your Prelims practice
Start with a few questions after studying a small topic. Read the explanations and work on anything you got wrong. As the basics become clear, try harder questions. After studying more subjects, take tests that mix those subjects. Then use full-length mock tests for the upcoming exam to practise within the time limit. You do not need to finish the whole syllabus before trying topic questions.

Learn the topic before writing Mains answers
Understanding one explanation does not mean you already know enough to write a full answer. You need the facts, concepts and examples that the question asks for. Learn the topic first. Once you have that knowledge, start with a short answer and build up through practice and feedback. Struggling at the beginning does not mean you cannot clear UPSC or must buy a course.
