Why in news?
The Union Minister of Science and Technology reviewed the progress of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) in April 2026. He announced that the foundation will soon launch an AI‑powered platform called SARAL AI to translate complex research papers into simple language podcasts and videos in multiple Indian languages. He also unveiled plans for mission‑oriented programmes addressing societal challenges.
Background
The Anusandhan National Research Foundation was established by the ANRF Act 2023, which replaced the Science and Engineering Research Board Act. Its mandate is to prepare national roadmaps for research and innovation, provide grants and fellowships, support the translation of research into products and services and encourage private investment in science. The foundation aims to mobilise around ₹50 000 crore over the 2023–28 period by combining government funding with industry contributions. Governance is vested in a board headed by the Prime Minister, with ministers of science and education, the principal scientific adviser and secretaries of relevant departments as members. A separate executive committee oversees implementation.
Current initiatives
- SARAL AI platform: An artificial‑intelligence system will convert technical research outputs into easy‑to‑understand audio, video and text content in 18 Indian languages, enabling the public and policymakers to appreciate scientific advances.
- MAHA programmes: The foundation plans to launch large multidisciplinary missions targeting areas such as clean energy, affordable healthcare and sustainable agriculture, bringing together academia, industry and startups.
- Nodal officers: Over 250 institutions have designated nodal officers to help researchers navigate funding schemes and collaborate more effectively with industry.
- Support for early career researchers: ANRF offers fellowships, mentorship and simplified grant application processes, including the use of popular messaging platforms for communication.
