Why in news?

The inaugural meeting of the Research Advisory Board of the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC) took place on 27โ€“28 March 2026. Scientists and policymakers gathered in Delhi to discuss plans for transforming Indiaโ€™s biotechnology landscape by unifying 14 autonomous institutions under one umbrella.

Background

BRIC was created in 2023 by merging 14 research institutes of the Department of Biotechnology. This consolidation aims to reduce duplication, encourage collaboration and create a cohesive national biotechnology laboratory. The Research Advisory Board (RAB), chaired by eminent biologist Prof. K. VijayRaghavan, guides research directions and monitors progress.

Highlights of the meeting

  • National missions: Participants proposed ambitious missions to tackle challenges in health, agriculture, environment and industrial biotechnology. The goal is to make Indiaโ€™s bioโ€‘economy globally competitive.
  • Shared infrastructure: The RAB emphasised building common facilities such as biofoundries, highโ€‘throughput screening platforms and biomanufacturing hubs accessible to all member institutes.
  • Frugal innovation: Researchers were encouraged to develop costโ€‘effective technologies using locally available materials, and to prioritise sovereign manufacturing capabilities.
  • Open science: The Council advocates open sharing of knowledge, data and biological resources to accelerate innovation and avoid duplication.

Significance

BRIC has the potential to transform India into a global biotechnology powerhouse by leveraging its youthful workforce, rich biodiversity and growing digital infrastructure. By coordinating research and focusing on national missions, it aims to shorten the pathway from discovery to deployment. The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration across disciplines, publicโ€“private partnerships and international cooperation.
