Why in news?
Scientists from Tamralipta Mahavidyalaya and Vidyasagar University have described a new species of estuarine fish from the Rupnarayan River near Tamluk in West Bengal. The species, named Butis bargabhimae, was collected during surveys between June 2022 and August 2024 and formally announced in early 2026.
Background
Butis bargabhimae belongs to the butid family of gudgeon gobies. The researchers noted that previous specimens of a similar fish were misidentified, so this discovery clarifies the taxonomy of the genus. The new species is named after the goddess Bargabhima, revered in the region.
Distinctive features
- Interorbital scales: Unlike its relatives, this fish has a row of scales between the eyes.
- Auxiliary scales: It bears extra scales across much of its body, which are absent in closely related species.
- Pectoral fin bands: The pectoral fins show distinct light and dark bands.
- DNA analysis: Genetic sequencing revealed about 86 % similarity to its nearest relatives, confirming it as a separate species.
Significance
This discovery highlights the rich biodiversity of eastern Indian rivers and emphasises the need for continued exploration. Understanding species diversity in estuarine ecosystems helps inform conservation plans and ensures that lesserβknown organisms are protected before their habitats are impacted by pollution or development.
