Why in news?

An Indian Army Special Forces contingent recently departed for Egypt to participate in the fourth edition of the bilateral special forces exercise Cyclone (Cyclone IV). The drill, hosted at the Anshas Military Base from early to mid‑April 2026, aims to deepen defence cooperation between India and Egypt and improve the ability of both armies to plan and execute high‑risk missions in desert terrain.

Background

The Cyclone series of joint drills was conceived to strengthen military ties between New Delhi and Cairo. The inaugural edition took place in January 2023 in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Since then, special forces teams from the two countries have met annually to share tactics and build trust. The exercises are held alternately in India and Egypt and mirror both nations’ interest in counter‑terrorism training and stability in the West Asian region. The Indian detachment comprises roughly two dozen highly trained soldiers drawn from elite units.

Key features of the exercise

  • Focus on special operations: Participants practise infiltration, exfiltration, close‑quarter battle, sniping and combat free‑fall techniques. Emphasis is placed on mission planning and coordination under simulated combat conditions.
  • Desert warfare: Training scenarios are set in arid landscapes to prepare troops for high‑temperature, low‑visibility operations. Troops learn to navigate dunes, conserve water and use camouflage in sandy terrain.
  • Joint planning: Officers from both armies jointly plan missions, developing shared standard operating procedures and communication protocols to ensure interoperability during combined operations.
  • Exchange of best practices: The exercise provides a forum to discuss lessons learned from previous counter‑terrorism operations and share advances in weapons, equipment and logistics.

Significance

  • Strengthening bilateral ties: Regular joint drills deepen strategic trust between India and Egypt and signal a commitment to mutual security.
  • Enhancing readiness: Exposure to each other’s tactics and equipment improves the ability of both forces to operate together in counter‑terrorism and hostage‑rescue missions.
  • Regional diplomacy: The exercise underscores India’s engagement with West Asian partners and its role in promoting stability in the Indian Ocean Region.

Conclusion

Cyclone IV continues a growing tradition of bilateral special forces exercises between India and Egypt. By operating together in challenging desert conditions, both militaries hone their skills and build the trust necessary for future cooperation in peacekeeping and counter‑terrorism missions.
