India and Egypt held their 11th Joint Defence Committee meeting in Cairo from 20–22 April 2026. The delegations reviewed progress since the previous meeting and agreed on a cooperation plan for 2026–27. The meeting underscores the growing strategic partnership between the two nations.
Background
Egypt is a transcontinental country linking northeast Africa and southwest Asia. It borders the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east and shares land boundaries with Libya, Sudan, Israel and the Gaza Strip. Most of its 100‑plus million population lives along the Nile River, which runs about 6,650 kilometres from south to north. The country’s area is around 1 million square kilometres, with most of the terrain consisting of desert punctuated by the fertile Nile Valley and Delta. Egypt’s climate is arid with hot summers and mild winters; rainfall is sparse, making the Nile essential for agriculture. The economy is diverse, combining agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and services, and it benefits from strategic assets such as the Suez Canal and petroleum resources.
Highlights of the Joint Defence Committee meeting
- Expanded cooperation plan: Both sides agreed on a defence cooperation programme for 2026–27 focusing on joint production and technology, structured military exchanges, maritime security cooperation and more complex military exercises. They also decided to strengthen joint training programmes and knowledge sharing.

The two sides discussed developing a defence industry cooperation plan to explore co‑development and co‑production opportunities.
- Naval and air force engagements: Inaugural Navy‑to‑Navy staff talks were held on the sidelines of the meeting.
