Why in news?
The Indian Navy hosted the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) Maritime Exercise (IMEX) Table‑Top Exercise 2026 at the Maritime Warfare Centre of the Southern Naval Command in Kochi on 27 March 2026. The exercise drew delegates from numerous Indian Ocean littoral states and marked India’s assumption of the IONS chairmanship for the 2026–28 cycle.
Background
The Indian Ocean Naval Symposium is a voluntary initiative launched by the Indian Navy in 2008 to promote cooperation among navies of Indian Ocean littoral states. IONS provides a forum for discussing maritime security issues, conducting joint exercises and building trust. Its chairmanship rotates every two years, and activities include workshops, essay competitions and biennial meetings.
IMEX TTX 2026 highlights
- Simulated environment: The table‑top exercise was conducted in a sophisticated simulator, allowing participants to practise responding to multiple maritime security scenarios—such as piracy, natural disasters and search‑and‑rescue—without deploying ships.
- International participation: Delegates from Bangladesh, France, Indonesia, Kenya, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Timor‑Leste took part. Officers from the IOS SAGAR course (Indian Ocean Seminar on African and Global Affairs) and the Indian Navy also attended.
- Objectives: The exercise aimed to enhance shared understanding of operational procedures, improve information‑sharing and decision‑making mechanisms, and validate maritime security guidelines under the IONS framework.
- Significance for India: By hosting the exercise and assuming the chairmanship after a sixteen‑year gap, India reaffirmed its leadership role in the Indian Ocean region. The activity underlined the importance of multilateral cooperation to address non‑traditional security threats and safeguard sea lanes that carry global trade.
About IONS
- Membership: IONS consists of 24 member states grouped into sub‑regions (South Asian, West Asian, East African and South‑East Asian/Australian) and several observer states. Members include India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Iran, Kenya, France, Australia, Indonesia and others.
- Purpose: To provide a neutral platform for navies to discuss maritime cooperation, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and maritime security challenges in the Indian Ocean region.
- Activities: In addition to table‑top exercises like IMEX, IONS hosts workshops, working groups and symposiums. The chairmanship rotates, ensuring shared ownership among member states.
