Why in news?

On 12 March 2026 a U.S. Air Force KC‑135 Stratotanker aircraft crashed in western Iraq during Operation Epic Fury. All six crew members were killed. Preliminary investigations indicate that the decades‑old refuelling aircraft went down due to mechanical failure and not hostile or friendly fire. The tragedy has drawn attention to the continuing U.S. presence in Iraq and the country’s strategic geography.

Background

Iraq sits at the heart of the Middle East, bordered by Iran, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Two great rivers — the Tigris and Euphrates — dominate its landscape, creating fertile plains that support agriculture and dense populations. Roughly 40 percent of the country is arid desert while the north and northeast are mountainous. The capital, Baghdad, lies on the Tigris.

The nation is often called the “cradle of civilisation” because ancient Mesopotamia flourished between these rivers. Modern Iraq is home to Arabs, Kurds and other ethnic groups and is rich in oil resources. The climate ranges from scorching deserts to temperate highlands.

The KC‑135 Crash

  • Aircraft involved: The KC‑135 Stratotanker is a Cold War‑era refuelling plane that normally carries a pilot, co‑pilot and boom operator. It extends the range of combat jets by refuelling them in mid‑air.
  • Operation Epic Fury: The aircraft was supporting U.S. operations against Islamic State remnants and regional militants. Authorities confirmed that the crash was not caused by enemy fire.
  • Casualties and investigation: All six crew members were killed. U.S. Central Command stated that the incident is under investigation and that there is no connection with other incidents of friendly fire in the region.

Country Profile

  • Rivers and landscapes: The Tigris and Euphrates run roughly parallel across the country before joining and emptying into the Persian Gulf. Their floodplains support most agriculture and cities. Deserts cover the west and south; mountains such as the Zagros rise in the east.
  • Climate: Iraq experiences hot, dry summers with temperatures exceeding 40 °C in the desert, and cool, wet winters in the north. Snow falls on the highest peaks.
  • People and culture: The population comprises Arabs, Kurds, Turkmen and other minorities. Arabic and Kurdish are official languages. Islam is the predominant religion with both Shia and Sunni communities.
