Kerala’s KITE AI initiative for teachers

Why in news?

The Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) rolled out a programme to train around 80,000 teachers in using artificial intelligence tools for teaching and administration.

Programme details

  • Samagra Plus platform: An upgraded version of the Samagra resource portal that integrates AI‑based features for lesson planning, content creation and assessment.
  • Training modules: Teachers learn to summarise text, generate images, craft effective prompts, visualise data and design AI‑assisted quizzes. The training covers responsible use of AI, emphasising privacy, algorithmic fairness and awareness of copyright.
  • Capacity building: A group of master trainers is formed at state, district and school levels to cascade the training to colleagues. The initial focus is on high school and vocational instructors.
  • Open‑source approach: KITE uses open‑source software to maintain data sovereignty and avoid vendor lock‑in.

Impact

Equipping teachers with AI skills prepares students for a digital future and fosters innovation in classrooms. Kerala’s model could inspire other states to integrate AI responsibly into education.
