Why in news?
In March 2026, U.S. forces carried out air strikes on military targets on Iran’s Kharg Island. While the oil terminal remained intact, the incident brought the island into global headlines and underscored its strategic importance as Iran’s main crude‑export hub.
Background
Kharg Island is a small coral island located in the northern Persian Gulf, about 34 miles (55 km) off Iran’s coast near the city of Bushehr. It is one of the few islands in the Gulf with natural freshwater sources, and its strategic position near the Strait of Hormuz has made it an important trading post for centuries. Archaeologists have found rock‑cut tombs on the island dating back to the Achaemenid period.
Why Kharg matters
- Oil export terminal: The island hosts Iran’s largest oil terminal. Deep waters allow supertankers to berth, and pipelines from mainland oil fields feed massive storage tanks. The terminal can load several million barrels per day and can accommodate multiple supertankers simultaneously.
- Historical development: In the 1960s American company Amoco helped develop Kharg as an export facility. During the 1980s Iran–Iraq war the island was heavily bombed, but operations resumed after repairs.
- Strategic vulnerability: Because most of Iran’s crude exports pass through Kharg, any disruption could affect global oil markets. The March 2026 air strikes therefore raised concerns about supply security.
- Natural features: The island is roughly 8 km long and 4.5 km wide, with a highest point around 87 metres above sea level. Aside from the oil terminal, it has sparse vegetation and a small civilian settlement.
Significance
- Geopolitical leverage: Control of Kharg enables Iran to ship oil despite sanctions and political tensions. Protecting the island is thus a priority for Tehran.
- Environmental concerns: Oil spills or military damage could harm the sensitive marine ecosystem of the Persian Gulf. The island’s limited freshwater reserves also require careful management.
