Why in news?
The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, in collaboration with Google and YouTube, recently launched a National AI Skilling Initiative to train 15,000 individuals in artificial intelligence. Announced at an event by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the programme aims to democratise AI literacy and prepare Indian creators and technologists for opportunities in the digital economy.
Background
Artificial intelligence is transforming industries worldwide. To keep pace with rapid changes and ensure that India’s workforce remains competitive, the government has partnered with Google and YouTube to provide free training through the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT). The initiative complements other digital inclusion efforts such as the MyWAVES platform and an advanced electronic programme guide (EPG) announced at the same event.
Programme structure
- Phase I – Foundational learning: Running from 23 March to 30 June 2026, this phase offers courses titled AI Essentials and Generative AI. Participants will learn basic concepts, responsible use of AI tools and how to generate ideas using state‑of‑the‑art models. These courses are delivered online and accessible in multiple Indian languages.
- Phase II – Specialisation: From July to December 2026, learners progress to hands‑on modules covering storytelling, YouTube content creation and advanced AI applications. The curriculum introduces participants to tools such as Google’s Gemini 3, Nano Banana, Veo and Vertex AI, and encourages project‑based learning.
- Free and accessible: Training is offered at no cost to participants. The goal is to reach students, job‑seekers and aspiring content creators across India, including in regional languages and remote areas.
- Complementary initiatives: Alongside the AI training, the ministry launched MyWAVES, a citizen‑creator platform that simplifies content publishing, and an upgraded television programme guide with in‑built satellite tuners for digital TVs. Together, these initiatives aim to foster a vibrant creator ecosystem and expand access to public broadcasts.
