Why in news?
On 5 April 2026 India celebrated National Maritime Day with the theme “Maritime India – Empowering Progress.” The Prime Minister and shipping leaders commemorated the day by highlighting India’s long coastline, the pivotal role of seafarers and port workers, and the need to modernise infrastructure to support the country’s growing maritime economy.
Background
National Maritime Day has been observed every year since 1964 to mark the historic voyage of the SS Loyalty. On 5 April 1919 this vessel became the first Indian merchant ship to sail from Mumbai to London under the Indian flag. The day honours the contribution of India’s maritime sector to the national economy. Today around 90 percent of India’s trade by volume moves by sea, making efficient ports and shipping vital for growth. The day also remembers seafarers who ensure smooth operations and braves challenging conditions at sea.

- Theme: The 2026 theme “Maritime India – Empowering Progress” underscored the importance of shipping and logistics in India’s development. It called for collaboration between government, private sector and international partners to upgrade ports and boost coastal and inland waterways.
