Why in news?
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will introduce open‑book assessments in Class 9 from the 2026–27 academic year. Pilot studies conducted in 2023–24 received positive feedback from teachers and paved the way for this reform.
What is an open‑book assessment?
An open‑book assessment allows students to refer to approved textbooks, notes and reference sheets while answering questions. The focus is on application of knowledge, analysis and problem‑solving rather than rote memorisation.
Objectives
- Encourage deeper understanding of concepts rather than superficial recall.
- Develop skills such as critical thinking, synthesis of ideas and real‑life application, in line with the National Education Policy 2020.
- Reduce exam‑related stress and make evaluations more student‑friendly.
How it will work
- Students may bring pre‑approved books and notes into the exam hall.
- Questions will require interpreting information, drawing connections and crafting well‑reasoned answers.
- Teachers will design assessments across subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies that reward analytical abilities.
Expected benefits
Open‑book assessments align school examinations with global higher‑education practices. They cater to diverse learning styles and encourage students to think beyond memorised material. With careful design and teacher training, OBE can foster a healthier, more meaningful learning environment.
