Why in news?
On 28 March 2026 the government opened nominations for the next edition of the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar. Scientists, innovators and teams across India can submit entries via the awards portal until 11 May 2026. The awards recognise outstanding contributions to science, technology and innovation and will be conferred on National Space Day in August 2026.
Background
The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar was instituted in 2023 to rationalise the country’s scattered science awards. It is administered by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research under the Ministry of Science & Technology. The awards replaced several ministry‑specific prizes and aim to honour scientists in a transparent and inclusive manner. The inaugural ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 22 August 2024 where 33 scientists received honours across various domains.

Scope and significance
The awards cover 14 domains including physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, mathematics, environmental sciences and innovation in engineering and technology.
