Why in news?

The Sahitya Akademi announced its 2024 literary awards on 18 December 2024. The awards recognise outstanding books published in various Indian languages and were presented on 8 March 2025. Understanding the award’s history and process is useful for aspirants preparing for cultural sections of competitive exams.

Background

The Sahitya Akademi Awards are among India’s most prestigious literary honours. Established in 1954, the awards aim to promote excellence in literature and acknowledge significant works written in the 24 languages recognised by the Sahitya Akademi, including English. The first awards were given in 1955. Over time, the cash prize has increased from β‚Ή5,000 at inception to β‚Ή1 lakh since 2009, along with a copper plaque and shawl.

Process and selection

  • Languages: Awards are given annually for books of outstanding merit in each of the recognised languages. They cover poetry, novels, short stories, essays, plays and literary criticism.
  • Jury system: For each language, a jury of three members reviews eligible works published in the previous five years and recommends a winner. The Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi approves the recommendations.
  • Award ceremony: Winners receive a plaque, shawl and cash award at a ceremony generally held on International Women’s Day (8 March) in New Delhi.

Importance

The awards promote linguistic diversity and encourage writers across India. They also highlight lesser‑known regional literature and ensure that Indian languages other than English receive national attention. For students, familiarity with recent winners and the award process helps in the art and culture sections of examinations.
