Why in news?
The Indian Council of Medical Research and the Department of Health Research have launched the SHINE initiative to popularise science among school and college students. It aims to nurture a scientific temper and expose students to practical research.
Objectives
- To provide hands‑on experience in laboratories, inspiring young people to pursue careers in science and research.
- To bridge the gap between classroom learning and real‑world application, particularly in health and biomedical sciences.
Key components
- Students visit research institutes and hospitals to observe experiments and interact with scientists.
- Workshops, internships and mentorship programmes introduce topics like epidemiology, genetics and laboratory safety.
- Science fairs and competitions encourage innovation and presentation skills.
Significance
- Early exposure can inspire students from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in science, addressing talent shortages.
- By demystifying science, the programme aims to counter misinformation and promote evidence‑based thinking.
Challenges
- Access to research facilities is limited in rural areas. Virtual labs and mobile science units may be needed to reach remote students.
- Sustained funding and coordination across institutions are essential to keep the programme dynamic.
- Ensuring safety and ethical conduct during student participation is critical.
