Why in news?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to Shyamji Krishna Varma on his death anniversary on 30 March 2026. In a tribute message, the Prime Minister praised Varmaโ€™s revolutionary ideas for awakening consciousness during Indiaโ€™s freedom struggle and said his ideals continue to inspire new generations.

Background

Shyamji Krishna Varma (1857โ€“1930) was a revolutionary nationalist, lawyer and journalist. Born in Mandvi, Kutch (presentโ€‘day Gujarat), he studied Sanskrit in India and subsequently read law at Balliol College, Oxford. Inspired by social philosopher Herbert Spencerโ€™s ideas on resistance to aggression, Varma became an early advocate of swaraj (selfโ€‘rule) and used his writings and organisations to campaign for Indian independence from British rule.

Life and contributions

  • Indian Home Rule Society: In 1905 Varma founded the Indian Home Rule Society in London to secure complete independence for India. The society aimed to prepare Indians for selfโ€‘government and provide financial and logistical support to revolutionaries.
  • India House: He established India House in Highgate, London, which served as a hostel and meeting place for Indian students and became a hub for nationalist activities. Notable revolutionaries such as Veer Savarkar and Madan Lal Dhingra were associated with India House.
  • The Indian Sociologist: Varma published a monthly journal, The Indian Sociologist, which challenged British policies and argued for Indian selfโ€‘rule. The journal was banned in India for its radical content.
  • Exile in Europe: After coming under scrutiny for his revolutionary activities, Varma moved to Paris and later to Geneva. He continued his activism through writings and speeches, supporting the idea of armed resistance against colonial rule. He spent the latter part of his life in Switzerland and passed away in 1930.

Legacy

Although he lived much of his life abroad, Shyamji Krishna Varmaโ€™s organisations, writings and financial support nurtured many Indian revolutionaries. His insistence on complete independence influenced the Hardline nationalists of the early twentieth century. In recognition of his contributions, the Government of India brought his ashes back to India in 2003 and built Kranti Teerth memorial in Mandvi. His life serves as an example of how diaspora Indians contributed to the freedom movement.
