Why in news?

President Droupadi Murmu attended a programme in early January 2026 to promote the Skilling for AI Readiness (SOAR) initiative. At the event she distributed AI course certificates to students, launched the #SkillTheNation challenge and virtually inaugurated an open learning centre of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in Rairangpur. The gathering showcased the government’s efforts to prepare young Indians for careers in artificial intelligence.

Background

SOAR is a flagship project of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship launched in July 2025. It aims to make foundational AI literacy available to students from Classes 6 to 12 and to teachers across India. The initiative offers three micro‑credential modules of 15 hours each for students and a more in‑depth 45‑hour module for educators. The curriculum covers basic concepts of machine learning, data literacy, ethical AI practices and responsible use of AI tools. Courses are delivered through the Skill India Digital Hub and emphasise hands‑on learning.

Features of SOAR

  • Inclusive reach: The programme targets students in government schools, PM SHRI schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas as well as private institutions. Teachers from diverse backgrounds are also encouraged to enrol.
  • Modular design: Short, focused modules make it easier for learners to grasp complex concepts without overwhelming them. Students progress from basic AI awareness to practical applications.
  • Ethical emphasis: Lessons highlight the importance of responsible AI use, bias mitigation and data privacy, aligning with the National Education Policy’s call for values‑based learning.
  • Centre of Excellence: The government has allocated ₹500 crore to establish a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence for Education. The centre will develop open‑source learning tools and assist institutions in implementing AI curricula.

Progress and impact

  • Within six months of launch, more than 1.59 lakh learners had enrolled in SOAR modules, reflecting strong demand for AI skills.
  • Students and teachers who complete the modules receive certificates endorsed by the government, enhancing their employability.
  • The #SkillTheNation challenge encourages citizens of all ages to sign up for the course and share their learning journeys.
  • SOAR aims to narrow the digital divide by providing AI education in regional languages and through government schools in rural areas.

Conclusion

By equipping the next generation with AI skills, India hopes to build a workforce ready for the jobs of the future. Continuous investment in teacher training, curriculum development and infrastructure will be key to achieving this vision.
