Why in news?
The Stockholm International Water Institute announced that Professor Kaveh Madani, Director of the United Nations University’s Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU‑INWEH), will receive the 2026 Stockholm Water Prize. He will be honoured by the King of Sweden during World Water Week in August 2026.
Background
The Stockholm Water Prize, established in 1991, is considered the world’s most prestigious water award. It honours individuals and organisations that have made outstanding contributions to sustainable water management, research and governance. Winners receive a cash award of 1 million Swedish krona and a crystal sculpture during a ceremony at Stockholm City Hall.
About the 2026 laureate
- Professional role: Kaveh Madani is Director of the UNU‑INWEH and has previously served as Vice‑President of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis. He is known for integrating science, policy and diplomacy in water management.
