Why in news?
The Ministry of Railways has announced that all railway units will patronise the newly launched Aabhar Collection store on the Government e‑Marketplace (GeM) portal for official gifting. The initiative is part of efforts to promote indigenous products and provide a transparent mechanism for government purchases.
Background
The Aabhar Collection is an online store curated by the GeM platform to showcase exquisite gift items and hampers. The concept supports the Vocal for Local campaign by featuring products that represent India’s rich handicraft and handloom traditions. The store was launched in 2024 and is managed under GeM’s social inclusion mandate.
Key features
- Curated products: The collection currently offers over 150 items. These include One District One Product (ODOP) items and goods bearing Geographical Indication (GI) tags, ensuring authenticity and regional diversity.
- Sourcing partners: Products are supplied by the Central Cottage Industries Emporium, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) and various state handloom and handicraft emporiums.
- Price range: Hampers and gifts range from about ₹500 to ₹25,000, catering to different budgets. Departments can place bulk orders for ceremonial events, conferences or corporate gifting.
- Procurement modes: Government departments and public sector units can purchase items through GeM’s standard procurement routes, including direct purchase and custom bids.
Why it matters
- Supporting artisans: By sourcing from ODOP and GI producers, the initiative offers market access to traditional craftspeople and promotes inclusive growth.
- Promoting transparency: Conducting purchases through GeM reduces the scope for favouritism and ensures compliance with procurement rules.
- Showcasing Indian heritage: The curated gifts serve as ambassadors of India’s diverse culture at official events and ceremonies.
