Why in news?
The Ministry of Minority Affairs added a new module to the UMEED portal to allow widows, divorced women and orphans to apply for maintenance from Waqf properties.
What is UMEED?
UMEED stands for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development. It is a digital platform that records and manages properties governed by Islamic endowments (Waqf). The portal aims to improve transparency and prevent mismanagement.
Features of the portal
- Time‑bound registration: Waqf boards must register properties within fixed deadlines, reducing delays and corruption.
- Geo‑tagging: Properties are mapped with GPS coordinates to prevent illegal encroachment.
- Dispute resolution: The system triggers alerts when ownership disputes arise and allows for online filing of grievances.
- User support: A helpline and email support assist beneficiaries in filing claims and tracking applications.
- Women‑centric provisions: Properties registered under women’s names remain outside the Waqf domain, ensuring women retain control over their assets.
New module
- Beneficiary registration: Widows, divorced women and orphans can register on the portal and undergo Aadhaar authentication.
- Online application: Applicants can submit requests for maintenance benefits without visiting multiple offices.
- Direct Benefit Transfer: Approved amounts will be credited directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts, reducing leakages.
- Transparency: The module records all transactions and decisions, enabling audits and ensuring accountability.
Significance
The portal empowers disadvantaged groups by simplifying access to Waqf benefits. Digital records reduce fraud, while geo‑tagging helps protect community assets. By supporting widows, divorced women and orphans, the government aims to promote social justice and inclusive development.
