Why in news?
A new press release highlighted the progress of the Vidyanjali initiative ahead of its second anniversary. Launched in September 2021 under the National Education Policy 2020, the programme invites individuals, alumni, retired teachers, corporations and civil society to contribute time, expertise and resources to government schools.
Background
The quality of facilities and learning outcomes in many government schools is limited by resource constraints. Vidyanjali seeks to bridge these gaps by mobilising volunteers and donors through an online platform. Contributions fall into two categories: services (like mentoring, sports coaching and career counselling) and assets (such as books, computers, laboratories and infrastructure).
Achievements so far
- Wide participation: More than 8.5 lakh schools have registered on the portal, and over 5 lakh volunteers have signed up to offer their skills and resources.
- Service activities: Over 56,000 service‑based programmes have been completed, including mentoring sessions, storytelling, teaching coding and supporting children with special needs.
- Asset contributions: More than 35,000 requests for assets such as tablets, sports equipment, drinking water facilities and science kits have been fulfilled, benefiting around 2 crore students.
- Digital transparency: The platform uses real‑time monitoring to track contributions and ensure accountability. Volunteers receive feedback and certificates for their contributions.
Significance
- Strengthening public education: Vidyanjali supplements government funding and helps schools meet diverse needs without relying solely on the state budget.
- Community ownership: Engaging local communities fosters a sense of responsibility and pride, improving the school environment and student outcomes.
- Skill sharing: Professionals share expertise in areas like AI, coding, entrepreneurship and mental health, exposing students to modern knowledge and career paths.
Conclusion
By inviting citizens and organisations to contribute their time and resources, Vidyanjali reimagines how India’s public schools can be supported. Continued participation and transparent implementation will determine the programme’s long‑term impact on educational equity.
