Why in news?
India will host the 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) in 2025, bringing together more than 300 high‑school students from 64 countries. Preparations for the event were announced in August 2025.
About the IOAA
The IOAA is a global competition for students interested in astronomy and astrophysics. Participants demonstrate theoretical knowledge, data‑analysis skills and practical observational abilities. The Olympiad encourages scientific thinking and international camaraderie.
2025 edition highlights
- Venue: Mumbai, Maharashtra.
- Organisers: Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
- Largest participation: Over 300 students will compete, making it the biggest IOAA yet.
- Blend of theory and practice: The contest includes written exams, data analysis and night‑sky observations using telescopes.
- Showcasing India’s legacy: The event will highlight India’s contributions from ancient astronomer Aryabhatta to modern missions like Chandrayaan‑3 and the solar probe Aditya‑L1.
Purpose
The IOAA not only fosters problem‑solving skills among students but also encourages cultural exchange and inspires careers in the space sciences. Hosting the Olympiad underscores India’s growing stature in astronomy and science education.
