Why in news?
India will host the 5th Coast Guard Global Summit in Chennai in 2027 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Indian Coast Guard. An International Coast Guard Fleet Review will be held alongside the summit.
About the Indian Coast Guard
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) was created in 1977 following the recommendations of the Nag and Rustamji committees. It operates under the Ministry of Defence and plays a crucial role in maritime security.
Roles and functions
- Maritime law enforcement: Prevent smuggling, piracy and illegal fishing within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
- Search and rescue: Save lives and provide medical assistance at sea.
- Marine environment protection: Respond to oil spills and protect biodiversity.
- Offshore security: Guard offshore installations like oil rigs.
- Surveillance: Monitor sea lanes and collect intelligence to support national security.
Significance of the summit
The global summit brings together coast guards from around the world to share best practices, enhance maritime domain awareness and promote cooperation. Hosting the event underscores India’s commitment to the “Security and Growth for All in the Region” (SAGAR) doctrine and highlights its leadership role in the Indian Ocean.
