Why in news?
Thirty meritorious students from tribal communities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands travelled to Delhi under the ‘Aarohan: Dweep to Delhi’ National Integration Tour. During their trip they met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and witnessed the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort.
Purpose of the programme
Organised by the Andaman and Nicobar Command, the week‑long tour exposes island youth to India’s cultural heritage, modern infrastructure and higher education opportunities. It aims to bridge geographical isolation, build confidence and foster a sense of belonging in the national mainstream.
Highlights of the visit
- Cultural and historical sites: The students visited the Red Fort, India Gate, the National War Memorial and the Taj Mahal, learning about India’s freedom struggle and architectural heritage.
- Academic exposure: They toured institutions such as Delhi Technological University and the National Science Centre, inspiring them to pursue careers in science and technology.
- Interaction with leaders: The Defence Minister urged them to uphold human values and contribute to nation‑building. The students also met service personnel who explained career opportunities in the armed forces.
Significance
By connecting remote islanders with the rest of the country, the Aarohan programme promotes national integration and empowers youth who might otherwise feel marginalised. Similar initiatives can help uplift disadvantaged communities and strengthen social cohesion.
