Why in news?
India successfully conducted field trials of the Akash Prime surface‑to‑air missile and night launches of Agni‑I and Prithvi‑II ballistic missiles in July 2025.
Akash Prime
- Akash Prime is an upgraded version of the Akash surface‑to‑air missile developed by DRDO. It features an indigenous active radio‑frequency seeker for accurate target tracking.
- It is designed to operate at high altitudes and in extreme temperatures. The trial in Ladakh at 4,500 metres proved its capability against high‑speed aerial targets such as fighters and drones.
- The system provides quick reaction air defence for mobile formations and critical infrastructure.
Agni‑I and Prithvi‑II
- Agni‑I: A medium‑range ballistic missile with a range of about 700 kilometres and a payload capacity of one tonne. It forms part of India’s strategic deterrent and can carry conventional or nuclear warheads.
- Prithvi‑II: A surface‑to‑surface missile with a range of around 350 kilometres. It uses liquid propulsion and is capable of carrying similar payloads.
- The recent night launches from the Integrated Test Range in Odisha validated operational readiness, accuracy and reliability under different conditions.
Importance
These tests highlight India’s growing self‑reliance in defence technology. Improved missile systems enhance air defence and deterrence, contributing to national security in a complex regional environment.
