Why in news?
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs launched the Angikaar 2025 campaign as part of the second phase of the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (Urban) to speed up the delivery of houses and improve beneficiary outreach. This initiative seeks to connect sanctioned houses with households in need by overcoming last‑mile hurdles.
What is Angikaar 2025?
Angikaar means “to accept”. The campaign focuses on converting approved housing projects into completed homes by ensuring that potential beneficiaries are aware of their entitlements and have access to necessary financing. It complements the core PMAY‑U scheme, which aims to provide affordable housing to urban poor families.
Main elements
- Door‑to‑door verification: Officials and volunteers visit households to verify applications, update beneficiary lists and resolve discrepancies.
- Loan camps and melas: The campaign organises housing loan melas and financial counselling sessions to connect beneficiaries with banks and housing finance companies.
- Awareness campaigns: Street plays, cultural events and digital outreach encourage eligible families to apply and educate them on building quality homes.
- Convergence of schemes: Angikaar aligns PMAY with other social welfare programmes, such as Swachh Bharat Mission (toilet construction), Ujjwala (cooking gas) and Ayushman Bharat (health insurance), creating integrated packages for beneficiaries.
Significance
- The campaign aims to accelerate the completion of houses sanctioned under PMAY‑U and improve transparency in allocation.
- By actively reaching out to vulnerable groups—women, slum dwellers and migrants—it promotes social inclusion.
- It encourages community participation and awareness, which can reduce middlemen and corruption in housing schemes.
