Why in news?

During a joint review meeting in early June 2026, Union minister Dr Jitendra Singh announced the launch of a digital portal supported by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF). The platform will provide training in patent filing, intellectual property protection and scientific research paper writing for researchers, students and innovators across India.

Background

The ANRF was established by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation Act, 2023 to strengthen India’s research ecosystem. It subsumes the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) and aims to promote research and innovation across science, technology, humanities and social sciences. The foundation plans to mobilise resources of around ₹50,000 crore over five years through government funding, industry partnerships and philanthropic contributions. By coordinating efforts among ministries, academia and industry, ANRF intends to transform India into a knowledge economy.

About the portal

  • Patent training: Modules cover procedures for filing Indian and international patents, licensing, opposition and ethical considerations. The portal also prepares researchers for the patent agent examination.
  • Scientific writing: Researchers can learn how to structure manuscripts, choose suitable journals, avoid plagiarism and communicate results effectively.
  • IP awareness: By teaching innovators how to identify and protect intellectual property, the portal aims to increase the number of patents filed from Indian research institutions and start‑ups.
  • Accessibility: The platform is designed for students and professionals across disciplines and will be hosted online so that individuals from remote areas can participate.

Importance

  • Improving research quality: Training in scientific writing can help researchers produce clearer and more impactful papers that meet international standards.
  • Strengthening innovation: Better awareness of patenting procedures encourages commercialisation of inventions and protects India’s intellectual property.
  • Collaboration: During the review meeting, officials emphasised greater coordination among scientific institutions to avoid duplication and share resources. The portal supports this vision by providing a common platform for capacity building.

Conclusion

The ANRF portal reflects India’s focus on nurturing a robust research culture. By equipping researchers with skills in patent filing and scientific writing, the foundation seeks to translate laboratory discoveries into intellectual property and market‑ready innovations.
