Why in news?
The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) has reached several milestones, including establishing thousands of tinkering labs and incubation centres across India. Recent reports highlight how the mission fosters a culture of innovation among students and start‑ups.
Background
AIM was launched by the government in 2016 under the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog). It aims to promote innovation and entrepreneurship through a network of laboratories, incubators and challenges. Atal Tinkering Labs encourage school children to use tools and equipment to build prototypes and learn science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills. Over 10,000 labs have been set up, engaging more than 1.1 crore students nationwide.
To support start‑ups, AIM has established 72 Atal Incubation Centres that provide workspaces, mentorship and seed funding. These centres have nurtured over 3,500 start‑ups and generated more than 32,000 jobs. Fourteen Atal Community Innovation Centres serve innovators in smaller towns and rural areas. The Atal New India Challenge offers grants of up to ₹1 crore for innovations that address societal needs. A network of more than 6,200 professionals mentors students and entrepreneurs through the Mentor India programme.
