Bhoramdeo Wildlife Sanctuary to Host New Jungle Safari

Why in news?

The Chhattisgarh government announced plans to start a 34‑km jungle safari inside the Bhoramdeo Wildlife Sanctuary. The eco‑tourism initiative aims to attract visitors while involving local communities in conservation.

Background

Bhoramdeo Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the Maikal range of the Satpura hills in Kabirdham (Kawardha) district, Chhattisgarh. Covering about 352 sq km, it forms part of the Kanha–Achanakmar corridor that connects protected areas in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The sanctuary takes its name from the nearby Bhoramdeo Temple, an intricately carved complex built by the Nagvanshi dynasty between the 7th and 11th centuries and often dubbed the “Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh”.

Features of the sanctuary

  • Diverse landscape: The terrain consists of undulating hills, dense tropical forests and streams. The Fen and Sankari rivers originate here.
  • Rich biodiversity: Lush stands of Sal, Saaj, Tendu and Nilgiri trees support wildlife such as tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur (Indian bison), chital, sambar deer and numerous bird species.
  • Tribal communities: The Baiga, Gond and Kanwar tribes live in and around the sanctuary, practising traditional agriculture and forest use.

Jungle safari project

  • Route: The proposed safari will traverse about 34 km through forested areas, including multiple crossings of the Sakri River. Visitors will get close views of wildlife and the Maikal landscape.
  • Community participation: Safari vehicles will be run by the Thanwarjhol Forest Management Committee, creating jobs and ensuring local stewardship. The project is expected to boost rural incomes and promote conservation awareness.
  • Sustainable tourism: Officials emphasise that the initiative will balance tourism with habitat protection. Safety measures, route management and monitoring systems are being finalised before the launch.

Conclusion

The jungle safari at Bhoramdeo exemplifies how eco‑tourism can support conservation and livelihoods. By showcasing the sanctuary’s natural and cultural heritage, the project hopes to draw visitors while empowering local communities and preserving wildlife.
