Background
The E‑4B is a heavily modified Boeing 747‑200 designed to act as the National Airborne Operations Centre. Its mission is to provide a survivable headquarters for the U.S. President, Secretary of Defense and Joint Chiefs of Staff if ground facilities are destroyed or communications are disrupted. First delivered in 1980, four aircraft remain in service, with at least one on alert at all times.
