Camera Trap Confirms a Tiger in Dihing Patkai National Park

Why in news?

A camera trap photographed a male Bengal tiger inside Dihing Patkai National Park in Assam. The Zoological Survey of India worked with the Margherita West Forest Range during the monitoring exercise. Assam’s Environment and Forest Minister announced the result on 19 August. Earlier pugmarks suggested tiger presence, but the photograph supplied direct scientific evidence.

What the new evidence establishes

A camera trap activates when an animal passes its sensor. The image can show species, sex and body markings. Tigers have distinctive stripe patterns. Repeated photographs can therefore help identify individuals and study their movement.

The new record confirms that one male tiger used the monitored area. It does not yet prove a resident breeding population. Researchers need repeated records of several individuals across seasons. Evidence of females and cubs would provide much stronger support.

Location and physical setting

Dihing Patkai lies in the Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts of Upper Assam. Official district records give the national park an area of 234.26 square kilometres. The Dehing River and the Patkai hill range give the landscape its name. Official records also use the spelling “Dehing Patkai.”

The park protects tropical lowland evergreen rainforest. Heavy monsoon rainfall supports a tall and layered canopy. Streams, wetlands and bamboo create varied habitats below it. The forest continues beyond the park through reserve forests and plantation areas.

The Patkai hills extend towards the India–Myanmar border region. Upper Assam also contains tea estates, coal areas, oil infrastructure and railways. This makes the forest strategically important for ecological connectivity. It also creates pressure along habitat edges and movement routes.

From sanctuary to national park

The area became Dihing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary in June 2004. Assam declared it a national park in June 2021. The higher category gives wildlife and habitat stronger legal protection. It also places greater limits on damaging activity inside the notified boundary.

National-park status does not remove every outside threat. Wildlife may move through adjoining forests and private land. Roads, mining and settlement can break these links. Conservation must therefore look beyond the protected boundary.

Why tiger presence matters

A tiger requires prey, water, cover and enough space. Its presence can indicate that several ecological parts still function. It can also support protection for a wider community of animals. These include elephants, primates, smaller cats and many forest birds.

Dihing Patkai is especially known for its rich wild-cat community. Official planning documents list tiger, leopard and clouded leopard. They also record several smaller forest cats. Coexistence depends on different prey, habitats and activity periods.

Scientific monitoring must continue

Camera placement affects what a survey detects. A photograph near one trail cannot describe the whole park. Teams should use a planned grid and record survey effort. This allows comparisons across years and locations.

DNA from scat can add information about identity and sex. Prey surveys show whether the food base is adequate. Patrol records reveal hunting or human entry. Together, these sources can distinguish a visiting animal from an established population.

Conservation priorities

Forest corridors need protection between Dihing Patkai and adjoining habitats. Safe crossings are important where transport lines divide animal routes. Edge villages need rapid support after livestock loss. Fair compensation can reduce retaliatory harm.

Tourism should remain limited by ecological capacity. A rare photograph can attract attention and traffic. Disturbance around camera locations may change animal behaviour. Exact tiger locations should therefore remain protected.

One camera-trap image has a precise meaning

The photograph confirms tiger presence at the recorded place and time. It does not establish the park’s tiger population, density or breeding success. Those conclusions require a longer and carefully designed study.

Conclusion

The tiger photograph gives Dihing Patkai an important and verifiable wildlife record. It also shows the value of cooperation between scientists and frontline forest staff. The next task is systematic monitoring across the wider rainforest landscape. Corridors, prey and local trust need equal attention. Conservation should turn a striking image into durable protection without making claims beyond the evidence.
