Why in News?
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) recently announced that it had uncovered an international drug‑trafficking syndicate, seizing more than 227 kilograms of Captagon tablets during “Operation Ragepill”. This is the first major seizure of the drug in India and highlights the growing illicit trade in synthetic stimulants.
Background
Captagon is the trade name for fenethylline, a synthetic stimulant developed in the 1960s by German pharmaceutical firms. It was initially used to treat attention‑deficit disorders and depression because it could provide sustained alertness and euphoria with fewer side effects than amphetamine. By the 1980s, however, physicians observed that fenethylline caused dependency and cardiovascular complications. Most countries banned the drug in 1986 and it was listed under Schedule II of the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances. Pharmaceutical production ceased, but clandestine laboratories – mainly in parts of the Middle East and southern Europe – began to manufacture counterfeit tablets containing a mix of amphetamine, caffeine and other stimulants.
In conflict‑affected regions of the Middle East, Captagon gained notoriety as a “poor man’s cocaine”. Its ability to induce prolonged wakefulness and suppress hunger made it popular among combatants and young adults. The drug’s trade has been linked to organised crime networks and militant financing. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration classifies fenethylline as a Schedule I controlled substance with no accepted medical use.
What is Captagon?
- Composition: Illicit Captagon tablets typically contain a blend of amphetamine (or its analogues) and caffeine. When ingested, the body metabolises fenethylline into amphetamine and theophylline, both powerful stimulants.
