Why in news?
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Ayush, released an official list of Ayurveda Aahara products in July 2025. This list aims to bring clarity to manufacturers and consumers by identifying foods prepared according to traditional Ayurvedic principles under the Ayurveda Aahara Regulations of 2022.
What is Ayurveda Aahara?
Ayurveda Aahara refers to foods formulated in accordance with the classical Ayurvedic texts, which emphasise balance, seasonal diets and the interplay of the three doshas—Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These products are intended not as medicines but as everyday foods that promote wellness by aligning with an individual’s constitution and the environment.
Key features of the list
- Authenticity: Only products with references in recognised Ayurvedic texts are included, ensuring fidelity to traditional formulations.
- Regulatory clarity: The list serves as a guide for food‑business operators seeking to manufacture or market such products, specifying ingredient standards and labelling requirements.
- Mechanism for additions: Manufacturers may apply to include new products if they can demonstrate textual support and safety; the National Institute of Ayurveda will vet proposals.
Importance
By defining what qualifies as Ayurveda Aahara, the government aims to integrate traditional dietary knowledge into contemporary food regulation. This supports entrepreneurs working with Ayurvedic recipes, fosters consumer trust, and aligns with India’s broader goal of promoting preventive healthcare through nutrition.
