Why in news?
The Ministry of Ayush launched the DRAVYA portal on 10 October 2025. The platform serves as a comprehensive digital repository for classical medicinal plants, minerals and other raw materials used in Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Sowa‑Rigpa.
Why a repository is needed
Traditional medicine relies on hundreds of natural substances whose properties, identification and sourcing must be standardised. Inconsistent quality of raw drugs can affect safety and efficacy. Until now, information on many substances was scattered across ancient texts, research papers and regional practices. A digital repository makes knowledge accessible to practitioners, researchers and regulators.
Features of DRAVYA
- Comprehensive database: The portal lists botanical names, vernacular names, geographic distribution, morphological descriptions and therapeutic uses of each substance.
- Multimedia content: High‑resolution images, videos and audio pronunciations help users correctly identify plants and minerals.
- Regulatory guidance: Information on permitted harvest seasons, sustainable collection methods and quality standards helps prevent over‑exploitation.
- Interactive tools: Users can compare substances, access glossaries and contribute data after expert review.
- Integration: The portal links with pharmacopoeias, lab standards and educational curricula, supporting research and teaching.
Benefits
By digitising and standardising information, DRAVYA will improve the quality of Ayurvedic products, aid conservation of medicinal flora and foster international collaboration. The portal empowers farmers by providing guidance on cultivation and allows consumers to learn more about ingredients in the products they use.
