Why in news? On 12 October 2025, a 120‑member Indian Army contingent departed for Irwin Barracks in Perth to participate in Exercise AUSTRAHIND 2025, scheduled from 13–26 October. The annual exercise aims to enhance interoperability and deepen defence cooperation between India and Australia.
Background
AUSTRAHIND began in 2022 as the land component of a broader India–Australia defence partnership. Each edition alternates host countries and focuses on company‑level operations in urban, semi‑urban and desert terrain. The exercise complements naval (AUSINDEX) and air force (AUSINDEX‑air) drills, reflecting the growing strategic alignment between the two democracies.
Highlights of AUSTRAHIND 2025
- Composition: The Indian contingent is led by a battalion of the Gorkha Rifles and includes troops from various arms and services. The Australian Army will field a similar‑sized unit from its infantry regiments.
- Training focus: Soldiers will practise joint planning, tactical drills, cordon‑and‑search operations, room clearing and casualty evacuation. Exercises will emphasise integrating emerging technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles, communications encryption and battlefield medicine.
- Broader engagement: Beyond drills, troops will participate in cultural exchanges and sports to build camaraderie. The exercise will also provide a forum to discuss regional security challenges and share lessons from peacekeeping missions.
Why it matters
Regular joint exercises prepare the two armies to operate seamlessly during humanitarian crises and peacekeeping missions. They also signal a collective commitment to a free and open Indo‑Pacific, deterring aggression and promoting stability.
