Why in news?
The fifth edition of Exercise Harimau Shakti, a bilateral military exercise between India and Malaysia, began on 5 December 2025 at the Mahajan Field Firing Range in Rajasthan. The two‑week exercise aims to rehearse joint operations under United Nations peacekeeping mandates and enhance interoperability between the armies.
Background
Exercise Harimau Shakti (Harimau means “tiger” in Malay) is a recurring training programme started in 2012 to strengthen defence cooperation between India and Malaysia. The 2025 edition involves troops from India’s Dogra Regiment and the Malaysian Army’s 25th Battalion. It focuses on sub‑conventional warfare and peacekeeping operations conducted under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
Key activities
- Joint drills: Participants practise cordon‑and‑search operations, search‑and‑destroy missions, heliborne insertions, casualty evacuation and securing helipads during counter‑terrorist scenarios.
- Skill exchange: Soldiers share best practices in combat shooting, Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR) and yoga to enhance physical fitness and combat readiness.
