Why in news?

India and Seychelles have commenced the 10th edition of Exercise LAMITIYE in March 2026. The joint military exercise, whose name means “friendship” in the Creole language, brings together Indian Army, Navy and Air Force units with their Seychelles Defence Forces counterparts to enhance cooperation and interoperability.

Background

Exercise LAMITIYE began in 2001 and is held biennially between India and Seychelles. It promotes defence cooperation, understanding of each nation’s procedures and the development of operational synergy. Seychelles, an island nation in the western Indian Ocean, is a strategic partner for India’s security interests in the region, particularly for maritime domain awareness and anti‑piracy efforts.

The 2026 edition is being hosted at Seychelles Defence Forces facilities on Mahé Island. India has sent a contingent from the Indian Army’s elite Gorkha Rifles, personnel from the Navy and Indian Air Force assets. The exercise covers drills on counter‑insurgency, counter‑terrorism and amphibious operations in semi‑urban and jungle environments. Participants also practise tactical manoeuvres, marksmanship and humanitarian assistance activities.

Key points and significance

  • Tri‑service cooperation: For the first time, the exercise includes integrated components from the Army, Navy and Air Force, reflecting India’s push for jointness among its services.
  • Strategic partnership: Seychelles occupies an important location along the Indian Ocean shipping lanes. Joint training helps both countries improve maritime security and disaster‑relief coordination.
  • Capacity building: Indian forces share best practices in counter‑terrorism and disaster relief, while learning about Seychelles’ experience in island defence and coastal surveillance.
  • Friendship and diplomacy: Beyond military drills, LAMITIYE fosters cultural exchanges and goodwill. Social activities, sports meets and community interactions strengthen people‑to‑people ties.
