Exercise MAITREE-XV: India and Thailand Train Together

Exercise MAITREE-XV: India and Thailand Train Together

Why in news?

Indian troops reached Thailand for the fifteenth Exercise MAITREE, scheduled from 18 to 31 August.

Who is participating?

The Indian Army sent 85 personnel, mainly from 9 Gorkha Rifles. Thailand fielded an equal contingent. The Thai troops belong to the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 25th Infantry Regiment.

That unit forms part of Thailand’s 5th Infantry Division. Training is taking place at Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp in Surat Thani. The province lies in southern Thailand beside the Gulf of Thailand.

The previous edition occurred at Umroi in Meghalaya during September 2025. Alternating venues expose troops to different terrain and procedures.

Purpose and training design

India and Thailand instituted MAITREE in 2006. The exercise builds tactical coordination between their armies. The 2026 edition focuses on jungle and semi-urban operations.

Activities include lectures, equipment demonstrations, field drills and a validation exercise. Teams will practise counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism tasks together. The scenario uses the framework of Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.

Chapter VII concerns action addressing threats to peace. The exercise wording does not mean MAITREE itself is a United Nations mission.

Interoperability in practical terms

Troops must understand common signals, planning methods and safety procedures. Repeated drills make cooperation more predictable during future operations.

The geographic and strategic setting

Surat Thani includes mainland terrain and islands in the Gulf of Thailand. Its varied environment supports jungle and semi-urban training. Thailand borders Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia.

Its coasts face both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. India and Thailand share a maritime boundary in the Andaman Sea.

Both participate in a Bay of Bengal regional framework. The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) links South and Southeast Asia.

Defence contacts complement wider connectivity. Thailand is central to India’s Act East policy. It also connects India with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

What the exercise can achieve

Small-unit training can improve mutual trust and field communication. It allows direct comparison of tactics, equipment and medical procedures. The chosen terrain has practical relevance for disaster relief and security operations.

However, military drills cannot substitute for political coordination. Officials should assess results beyond ceremonial statements. After-action findings can guide future training, language support and compatible communications.

A bilateral exercise with regional value

MAITREE strengthens army-level familiarity. It also supports India–Thailand ties across the Bay of Bengal and Southeast Asia.

Conclusion

The fifteenth edition reflects a mature training relationship. Its value will come from measurable learning and sustained follow-up.
