Why in news?

India will participate in Exercise Pitch Black 2026, a large multinational air exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). The exercise will run from 20 July to 7 August 2026 and will involve nineteen nations.

Background

Exercise Pitch Black is the RAAF’s flagship biennial air combat exercise. It began in the early 1980s and provides a platform for air forces from around the world to practise complex missions in Australia’s vast airspace. The exercise emphasises night‑time flying (hence the name “Pitch Black”) and joint operations. India previously took part in the 2018, 2022 and 2024 editions.

Highlights of the 2026 edition

  • Scale: More than 100 aircraft and 4,400 personnel from nineteen countries will participate.
  • Bases: Operations will be conducted from RAAF Bases Darwin and Tindal in the Northern Territory and RAAF Base Amberley in Queensland.
  • Training missions: Exercises will include offensive and defensive counter‑air operations, air‑to‑air refuelling, airborne early warning and tactical integration of diverse aircraft and communication systems.
  • Community events: The RAAF plans an air show at Darwin’s Mindil Beach and an open day at RAAF Base Darwin to engage with the local community.
  • Indian participation: The Indian Air Force will send a multi‑role contingent, providing exposure to modern air combat tactics and strengthening interoperability with partner nations.

Significance

Exercise Pitch Black enhances tactical skills and promotes cooperation among participating air forces. For India it offers valuable experience operating alongside advanced fighters from countries such as Australia, the United States, France and the United Kingdom. The drill also underscores India’s commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo‑Pacific region.

Conclusion

Participation in Exercise Pitch Black 2026 will further strengthen India’s defence ties with Australia and other partners. Regular engagement in multinational exercises enhances readiness, interoperability and confidence among friendly air forces.
