Why in news?
Brazil conferred its highest civilian honour, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, on India’s Prime Minister during his visit in July 2025. The award symbolises the strengthening of India–Brazil relations.
About the order
- Established in 1822 and reconstituted in 1932, the National Order of the Southern Cross is Brazil’s highest honour for foreign dignitaries. It recognises significant contributions to Brazil or to bilateral relations.
- The Grand Collar is the order’s top grade. Past recipients include heads of state and royalty.
Significance of the award
- Diplomatic ties: It underscores growing cooperation between India and Brazil in areas such as defence, digital public infrastructure, renewable energy, agriculture and space.
- Global South solidarity: Both countries advocate reform of multilateral institutions and champion south‑south cooperation.
