Why in news?
A high‑level meeting of the Group of Friends for Accountability of Crimes against Peacekeepers took place at the United Nations in July 2025. India, Bangladesh and France co‑hosted the event.
Background
The group was launched in December 2022 during India’s presidency of the UN Security Council. Its aim is to ensure justice when peacekeepers are attacked.
Key messages
- India’s Permanent Representative emphasised that accountability is a strategic necessity for effective peacekeeping. Without justice, attacks will continue.
- The group called for stronger legal frameworks in host countries and better cooperation between troop‑contributing countries, host governments and the UN to investigate and prosecute crimes.
- Training and equipment for peacekeepers should include self‑defence and situational awareness. Mandates should incorporate accountability provisions.
- India has contributed over 300,000 peacekeepers since 1948 and has lost 182 personnel in service. The meeting honoured their sacrifice.
Why it matters
Ensuring accountability deters attacks, boosts morale and upholds the rule of law. India’s leadership in this initiative reinforces its commitment to multilateralism and the safety of peacekeepers worldwide.
