Why in news?
India has dispatched relief materials including kitchen sets, hygiene kits, plastic sheets, tarpaulins and sleeping bags to Afghanistan after severe floods and an earthquake struck the country’s northern regions. The External Affairs Ministry said the aid reflects India’s solidarity with the Afghan people and commitment to humanitarian support.
Background
Beginning in late March 2026, heavy rains triggered flash floods in several Afghan provinces. Within days a magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit the Hindu Kush region. According to reports, nearly 150 people died, more than 200 were injured and over 1,100 houses were destroyed. Landslides and floods affected more than 7,500 families. Afghanistan, already grappling with poverty and infrastructure gaps, was ill‑prepared to cope with the disasters. The international community, including India, stepped in with humanitarian aid.
What India provided
- Emergency supplies: India’s relief consignment included family tents, sleeping bags, tarpaulins, plastic sheets, kitchen utensils, hygiene kits and water purification tablets. These items help families establish temporary shelters and meet basic needs.
