Why in news?
The Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Vigraha, the seventh in a series of offshore patrol vessels, has entered active service. Built by L&T Shipbuilding in Chennai, the vessel enhances India’s capability to monitor its Exclusive Economic Zone, combat smuggling and piracy, and undertake search‑and‑rescue missions along the eastern seaboard.
Background
ICGS Vigraha is part of a line of modern offshore patrol vessels ordered by the Coast Guard to replace older ships and expand maritime surveillance. Constructed under the government’s Make in India initiative, it reflects India’s push for indigenous shipbuilding. The vessel was formally commissioned in 2021 and is based at Visakhapatnam to patrol the Bay of Bengal.
Key specifications
- Size and endurance: The ship is approximately 98 metres long, displaces about 2,200 tonnes and can sail at a maximum speed of 26 knots. Its endurance of 5,000 nautical miles allows it to remain at sea for extended periods.
- Crew and capacity: It carries a complement of around 11 officers and 110 sailors. There is space for a twin‑engine helicopter and four high‑speed boats used for boarding and rescue operations.
- Systems and weaponry: Vigraha is fitted with advanced navigation and communication equipment, including radars, electronic support measures and an integrated bridge system. It is armed with a 40/60 Bofors gun, two 12.7 mm stabilised remote‑controlled guns and modern fire‑fighting equipment.
Roles and importance
- Maritime surveillance: The vessel patrols India’s Exclusive Economic Zone, deters illegal fishing and smuggling and upholds maritime law.
- Search and rescue: Its helicopter and high‑speed boats enable rapid response to distress calls, saving lives at sea.
- Environmental protection: Equipped with pollution control equipment, Vigraha can respond to oil spills and other maritime environmental hazards.
- Indigenous capability: Construction by an Indian yard with mostly local components strengthens the domestic shipbuilding industry and reduces dependence on imports.
Conclusion
ICGS Vigraha showcases India’s growing maritime capabilities and commitment to protecting its vast coastline and surrounding seas. By combining endurance, modern sensors and a helicopter deck in a single platform, the ship will play a vital role in coastal security and humanitarian assistance.
