Why in news?
The Government of India and the African Union decided to postpone the fourth India–Africa Forum Summit (IAFS), originally scheduled in New Delhi from 28–31 May 2026. This decision followed a worsening Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa and was announced on 21 May 2026. Both sides agreed to reschedule the summit once the public health situation improves.
Background
The India–Africa Forum Summit is a triennial gathering that brings together Indian and African leaders to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, health, education and technology. The first summit was held in New Delhi in 2008, the second in Addis Ababa in 2011 and the third again in New Delhi in 2015. These meetings have led to initiatives in capacity‑building, solar energy, agriculture and infrastructure. The fourth summit planned for 2026 was expected to deepen collaboration in public health, digital connectivity and sustainable development.
Why was it postponed?
- Ebola outbreak: An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighbouring countries led to travel restrictions and raised concerns about participants’ safety.
