NITI Aayog launched the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) 2024 to benchmark states and union territories on their progress in adopting electric vehicles.
About the index
- The IEMI scores states and UTs out of 100 based on the electrification of transport, readiness of charging infrastructure, policy support and research and innovation.
- It aims to promote healthy competition among states and provide guidance on best practices.
- A public dashboard allows comparison across states and highlights areas needing improvement.
Key findings
- Delhi, Maharashtra and Chandigarh ranked highest overall, reflecting strong EV sales, good policy frameworks and relatively robust charging networks.
- Karnataka leads in the number of public charging stations, while Telangana and Gujarat also performed well.
- The share of EVs in total vehicle sales increased from about 5 % in 2018 to 7.7 % by 2024. More than 5 million EVs are on Indian roads, and public charging points exceed 25,000 as of October 2024.
- Twenty‑nine states and UTs have notified or drafted EV policies.
Importance of the IEMI
- Encourages states to align with national net‑zero goals and complement central schemes like FAME II and PLI.
- Identifies gaps in charging infrastructure and manufacturing ecosystems.
- Supports the Make in India initiative by highlighting policy measures that attract investment.
- Promotes a data‑driven approach to EV adoption and helps investors assess regional readiness.
The index will be updated regularly, keeping states accountable and accelerating India’s transition to electric mobility.
