Why in news?

India recently hosted the 35th plenary and working‑group meetings of the International Organisation for Standardisation’s (ISO) Sub‑Committee on Space Systems and Operations. Delegates from many countries came to New Delhi to discuss global standards for satellite design, mission operations and space debris management. This gathering highlighted India’s growing role in shaping international norms for the booming space sector.

Background

The International Organisation for Standardisation is an independent, non‑governmental body formed in 1947. It brings together national standard bodies from around 170 countries to create common rules that make products and services safer and more reliable. ISO standards cover everything from food safety and health care to information technology and now space missions. India joined ISO in 1949 and actively participates through the Bureau of Indian Standards.

Key points from the meeting

  • Scope of discussions: Delegates reviewed draft standards on satellite reliability, testing procedures for launch vehicles and best practices for tracking space debris. They also discussed the role of commercial space companies in standard setting.
  • Participation: About 130 experts from 13 countries and international organisations attended. India hosted several side events showcasing its achievements in satellite technology and space exploration.
  • Importance for India: As India’s private sector enters satellite manufacturing and launch services, common standards help ensure compatibility with international partners and protect the space environment. Hosting the meeting underlined India’s ambition to be a responsible space power.
  • About ISO: ISO’s name comes from the Greek word isos meaning “equal.” The organisation’s secretariat is based in Geneva and its work is carried out by technical committees and sub‑committees staffed by specialists from member countries. It operates on consensus; when a standard is published, it can be adopted by any country to harmonise its regulations.
