Why in news?
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) introduced IRSA 1.0, India’s first national software architecture standard for Software Defined Radios (SDRs). The standard will guide the development and deployment of interoperable radio systems across the Army, Navy, Air Force and other agencies.
Key features
- Unified framework: IRSA defines a common architecture for SDRs, ensuring that radios built by different vendors can operate together.
- Scalability: The standard supports a range of radio sizes – from handheld devices to ship‑borne and airborne systems – enabling easy upgrades.
- Interoperability: Common waveform definitions and interfaces allow radios from different services to communicate without compatibility problems.
- Certification mechanism: A certification process will test and validate new radios against IRSA specifications before induction.
Significance
- Operational synergy: Interoperable radios improve coordination during joint operations and disaster relief.
- Strategic autonomy: Developing indigenous standards reduces dependence on foreign technology and enhances security.
- Export potential: A recognised national standard can boost exports of Indian SDRs to friendly countries.
