Why in news?
Tata Advanced Systems Ltd. announced in September 2025 that it would establish a defence manufacturing plant in Berrechid, Morocco. The facility will produce the Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8×8, making it India’s first overseas defence production unit.
Background and context
India is one of the world’s largest arms importers but has been pushing for self‑reliance and export capabilities through the “Make in India” initiative. Public and private firms have begun exporting small arms, radars and patrol vessels. The partnership with Morocco deepens defence ties and opens the African market to Indian products.
Details of the project
- Plant capacity: The 30,000‑square‑metre facility will produce up to 250 Wheeled Armoured Platforms by 2030, primarily for Morocco’s armed forces.
- WhAP features: Developed jointly by Tata and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the 8×8 amphibious vehicle carries a 30 mm cannon and can transport eight infantry soldiers. It can traverse rough terrain and water bodies, making it suitable for peacekeeping and border patrols.
- Technology transfer: Building the plant abroad involves sharing manufacturing know‑how, supply chain management and quality assurance with the partner country.
Importance
The venture demonstrates India’s emergence as a defence exporter and its willingness to set up production facilities closer to customers. It strengthens bilateral relations with Morocco, creates local jobs and could lead to further orders from Africa and West Asia. Domestically, success abroad could encourage more Indian firms to enter global markets and reduce dependency on imports.
